Veterinary Referral Hospital of Hickory welcomes Dr. Brett Wood
Veterinary Referral Hospital of Hickory is happy to welcome Dr. Brett Wood to our team!
Though he is originally from New York, Dr. Wood is a long-time North Carolinian – he earned his Master’s degree in Resource Ecology from Duke University, did a four-year stint with the Army at Fort Bragg, and attended North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
He left the state for just over a decade while he completed his internship and residency at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, and then practiced medicine in New Hampshire, New York, and New Mexico. However, he knew the east coast was his true home, and returned to North Carolina when he took a veterinary surgeon job in Asheville. Now, of course, he has made a home with Veterinary Referral Hospital of Hickory.
Dr. Wood has a simple work outlook: “As a veterinarian, the quality of life of our patients should be the number one priority. As we all know, there are many treatments that are available for our patients, but I believe an equally important consideration is, what should we do for our patients and their owners?” said Dr. Wood.
Dr. Wood has a special interest and proficiency in oncologic surgery, minimally-invasive surgeries, and neurosurgery. He prioritizes staying on top of the latest surgical techniques and how they improve patient care. It is important to him to stay current within his specialty and to be able to offer the most up-to-date, effective treatments available.
Dr. Wood also values communication. “It allows everyone to stay on the same page and ensures the patient’s best care from the initial consult to recovery.”
An adept surgeon, Dr. Wood manages common surgical cases like cranial cruciate ligament ruptures and cancer surgery to complex surgical cases like spinal surgery and portosystemic shunt repairs. He accepts surgical and orthopedic consultations by referral from our region’s veterinarians. Please help us welcome Dr. Wood to our practice.
